To every artist building a legacy, not just a portfolio — this one’s for you.

When I received the Kölner KulturPaten Award this week, it was more than a recognition. It was a green light.

A confirmation that the work I do — helping artists become independent, strategic, and financially sovereign — is not only needed, but overdue.
Because here’s the truth: we are the first generation of artists in history who can build visibility and income not relying on the middlemen. The tools are already here. Social platforms. Newsletter systems. Payment processors. Websites. Online exhibitions. Yet the majority of artists are still walking into their careers completely unprepared.

That is not a failure of talent. It’s a failure of education.

Most art schools still train students for a world that no longer exists. A world where gallery representation was the holy grail, and marketing yourself was seen as vulgar. They don’t teach you how to price. They don’t teach you how to negotiate. They don’t teach you how to sell.

And for many artists — especially women — this lack of knowledge becomes devastating later in life. Studies show that a majority of female artists will retire without stable financial security. No pension. No assets. No structure. Why? Because no one taught them how to make their art into a business.

Entrepreneurship is the most confronting and liberating journey
an artist can go on.

  • Don’t like numbers? You’ll learn them.
  • Hate talking about your art? You’ll have to.
  • Afraid of tech? That website isn’t going to build itself.

But this is the beauty of it. Entrepreneurship shows you your blind spots — so you can transform them.

This award is not the finish line. It’s permission to go further.

The work of helping artists thrive beyond the studio, of building systems and legacy and freedom, is no longer "nice to have". It is essential.
